Our history
VAT INSTITUTE started in 2003 as a one-man practice run from home in Dordrecht. More than twenty years later, we are the largest independent VAT advisory firm in the Netherlands, still based in Dordrecht.
History
From one-man practice to institute
2003
The beginning
In August 2003 Machiel van Driel, then 27 years old, starts out from his home in Dordrecht as an independent VAT specialist. The market is ready for it: VAT specialists are scarce and many firms are too small for a full-time specialist of their own. Several large clients place their trust in him from the start. In those years the work consists almost entirely of Dutch VAT questions.
2004
The first colleagues
In early 2004 the firm welcomes its first employee and a secretary. The one-man practice becomes a team.
2005
A focus on technical excellence
Matthijs van der Wulp joins. Alongside the advisory practice, technical excellence takes a permanent place: the academic foundation beneath all our work.
2008
The international practice
With the arrival of Frank Resseler the firm gains an international practice. The work broadens: more compliance engagements, in-company training and education for professional bodies, and a growing number of objection and appeal cases.
Later
Growing with familiar faces
The team grows with the practice, and those who join tend to stay. That is no coincidence: we look for the professional in the person and the personal in the profession. Our office has always remained in Dordrecht.
Today
Strongly positioned
Today VAT INSTITUTE holds a strong position in transport and logistics, international trade and services, real estate and non-profit. Alongside knowledge and people, we increasingly put technology to work. And many of the clients who joined us in 2003 are still with us today.
